Rachel Alexandra justifies favoritism in Preakness

Rachel Alexandra was the overwhelming choice in the 134th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse on Saturday. A filly had not won the Preakness since 1924. No horse had won the second leg of the American Triple Crown from post 13. It began raining as horses were being stalled. A trip that would force her to race one removed from the rail did not deter the filly. Rachel Alexandra, away alertly, disputed the lead with Big Drama, struck the front turning for home and held on the fast-finishing Mine That Bird.

Mine That Bird, the Kentucky Derby winner, lay last and made a charge to be the bridesmaid.

“God knows how good this filly is,” said jockey Borel.

Trainer Steve Asmussen stated, “it has been an unbelievable 10 days. She is so special. Calvin gave her a great ride.”

Jess Jackson, part owner of Rachel Alexa ndra, said that Belmont Stakes will be considered but no commitment is being made.
